Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who is eligible for Medicare?
A. Anyone 65 or older and people with certain disabilities or illnesses.

Q. Does Original Medicare cover all of my medical expenses?
A. No. There are deductibles and coinsurance payments for Part A and premiums for Part B. For additional coverage consider Medicare Supplemental Insurance which can cover up to 100% of deductibles and coinsurance.

Q. When can I enroll in a Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) policy?
A. Once you turn 65, you have a 6 month window during which you cannot be turned down for a Medigap policy. You can still enroll after this six month window but the costs could change and you could be subject to a six month preexisting condition waiting period.

Q. Can I be turned down for a Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) policy due to a preexisting condition?
A. It depends. During the 6 month open enrollment period you are guaranteed coverage. But if want to enroll after that period you may be subject to a six month waiting period if you have a preexisting condition.

Q. Is Medicare an entitlement program?
A. Not really. Most Medicare recipients have been paying into the program as long as they have been employed. Some do consider it an entitlement program because the premiums paid in do not cover the costs of the services rendered.

Q. How do I enroll in a Medicare Supplemental Insurance (Medigap) plan?
A. Medigap policies can be purchased from many private insurance companies. It’s recommend that you compare policies using a tool like this Medicare Supplemental Insurance comparison service.
